What is dressage?

Dressage is a French word that literally means training. Horses begin at the training level and progress thru levels 1,2,3 and finally, to the Grand Prix level. Each level demands more from the horse and rider than the previous level. Movements become more complicated and the horse becomes more collected. Harmony and suppleness are two key words used to describe the art of dressage.

Who can ride dressage?

Any rider can learn to ride dressage. Collection, contact, suppleness, rhythm, and movement are all elements of this challenging and rewarding sport.

Do I need a special horse for dressage?

Any horse can be taught basic dressage; however, not all horses are suited both physically and psychologically to advance to the upper levels. Conformation and movement are key, but horses without great conformation and movement have been known to excel at dressage through sheer determination and heart.

Is dressage expensive?

We've all heard the old adage, "I used to have money, now I have horses." Like any other equestrian activity, dressage can get very expensive. Cost depends on your involvement.
